Bishop Fredrik Modéus, brother of Archbishop Martin Modéus, in the Church of Sweden, attacks SD politician and Samnytt contributor Kent Ekeroth in a video post on social media. He accuses Ekeroth of being a threat to democracy who dehumanizes people and appeals to the political establishment to distance themselves from him. Ekeroth has responded to the attack by saying he is simply describing reality in Sweden.
This week, Fredrik Modéus and the Church of Sweden shared a video post on their platforms commenting on Ekeroth’s way of describing the earlier September election results as the red-green side winning with “vote cattle from abroad.”
This is something Martin Modéus and the Church of Sweden consider unacceptable to express in Sweden. He therefore appeals for more people to react to Ekeroth’s statement.
– It is a way of talking about people that threatens our democracy. It is an anti-democratic way of speaking, he says, and continues:
– It is also a grossly dehumanizing way to talk about people – which is not acceptable. Moreover, it is dangerous.

The bishop believes that we must be able to expect more from our elected politicians. We must be many who defend the value and dignity of humans, he says.
– Important to distance ourselves from this way of speaking.
Bishop: SD Policy is Not Christian
Modéus is one of the bishops who has publicly criticized the Tidö government, among other things through opinion articles. He has stated that several parts of the Tidö Agreement go against the principle of solidarity.
On social media, he has also published pictures with former Social Democratic ministers and written posts expressing concern about the political and societal development in Sweden.

According to the bishop, the Sweden Democrats claim to protect Swedish culture with Christian roots. In practice, however, he believes the party’s policies harm “the weak” and thus conflict with the values that characterize the Christian intellectual tradition.
In the Tidö Agreement, we read about the right to asylum at the EU minimum level, restrictions on family reunification, a stricter stance on quota refugees, abandoning the one percent goal, bans on begging, and lowered climate ambitions. The proposals go against values that characterize Christian tradition.

Ekeroth Responds: “Describing Reality”
Samnytt has been in contact with Kent Ekeroth for a comment on the bishop’s criticism of him. According to Ekeroth, it is not anti-democratic to describe reality as one perceives it.
– It is not anti-democratic to describe reality. There was an uproar when I said it, and just days later exactly what I described was confirmed. The bishop should instead be worried about clan voting and election fraud that comes with the vote cattle. But of course, he’s not.

At the same time, Ekeroth wants to clarify for the bishop and the establishment at large that he has never claimed that immigrants who vote constitute a problem. What he has instead highlighted is the issue of people who have not assimilated into Swedish society.
– I’ve never said that immigrants who vote are a problem. On the contrary. I have warned that those who have not assimilated into Swedish society are given the right to vote. That leads to things like the scandal we are now witnessing.
Ekeroth also directs a few cutting remarks back at the bishop, whom he claims is deliberately playing dumb.
– He pretends to be stupid when he takes vote cattle literally, as if it were a zoological diagnosis. It is an old polemical expression for a voter group perceived as strongly mobilized for a certain alternative. No one believes that I am biologically classifying people as cattle. Pretending to be shocked over the metaphor is a way to avoid discussing the phenomenon.
The SD politician also asks why the bishop did not react in the same way when pro-Palestinian demonstrations filled Swedish streets, where according to Ekeroth hateful chants were directed at both Jews and elected representatives in Sweden.
He believes that neither Bishop Fredrik Modéus nor the Church of Sweden at large made corresponding efforts to criticize those expressions.
– Then he worries about the language and says words matter. How funny. I heard no statement from him when immigrants were marching through streets and squares chanting hate, including direct violent threats against Jews and politicians, unlike my metaphor, says Ekeroth and continues:
– All this means you can’t take the bishop seriously. He is just another in a long line of failed opinion makers who completely miss the point. He should instead be worried about what these overwhelming demographic changes will lead to for the Swedish people. But, of course, he is not.
