Sverigedemokraterna voters are hardly the first group you associate with electric cars. However, a new survey shows that the share of electric car drivers is actually slightly higher among SD voters than those of both the Social Democrats and the Left Party.

The survey, conducted by Kantar Sifo on behalf of car marketplace Kvdbil, asked 1,040 people aged 20 to 79 with access to a car about, among other things, their political party preference and what type of car they drive.

The highest proportion is found among Liberal Party supporters. The Green Party, which might seem the most obvious guess, actually lands in third place.

Among Liberal Party voters, 22 percent state that they drive an electric car. That is the highest figure among the parties included in the survey.

The Moderates and the Green Party follow, both at 20 percent. The Christian Democrats end up at 17 percent and the Centre Party at 15 percent.

Sverigedemokraterna are in sixth place, with 14 percent of their voters stating that they drive an electric car.

The Social Democrats are just behind at 13 percent, while the Left Party has the lowest share at 10 percent.

If plug-in hybrids are included, the differences between party voters become more pronounced. Among Liberal Party voters, 49 percent say they drive either an electric or a plug-in hybrid car. This means that almost every other Liberal voter in the survey owns a rechargeable car.

The Moderates follow at 35 percent and the Green Party at 31 percent. For the Social Democrats, the corresponding share is 24 percent, while both the Sweden Democrats and the Left Party are at 23 percent. No corresponding figure for Christian Democrat voters is provided.

The result also means that the Green Party is not the party whose voters drive the most rechargeable cars. That position belongs to the Liberal Party, which is clearly ahead of the others.
