A 15-year-old girl claimed that a male relative had raped her several times and committed other sexual offenses against a child. The man was arrested, detained, and held in custody for almost two months. He was subsequently charged with child rape and sexual abuse of a child at Kalmar District Court. But after the main hearing, the girl admitted that everything was made up. She is now being prosecuted for two counts of aggravated false accusation.
According to the indictment that prosecutor Nina Erlandsson submitted to the court, the 15-year-old girl gave false statements during police interviews and in court, alleging she had been subjected to several instances of rape.
Among other things, she claimed that the accused man had inserted his fingers into her genitals and committed other sexual assaults.
The accusations led to the male relative being arrested and detained on March 6 this year. He was then deprived of his liberty until April 24—almost nine weeks. After that, he was charged with child rape and sexual abuse of a child.

No technical evidence – still prosecuted
The charges against the man were based solely on the girl’s statements. There was no technical evidence at all, according to the court documents. The prosecutor who brought charges against the man and placed him in detention was District Prosecutor Linda Caneus.
In interviews, the accused man described how he felt during his detention. Among other things, he had difficulty eating, slept a lot, and was prescribed both sleeping medication and anxiety medication.
He also had recurring thoughts of harming himself and taking his life by hanging. Even after his release, these thoughts have persisted, albeit less frequently. He has also sought help from adult psychiatry services.

Withdrew everything – after the trial
It was only after the main hearing in district court that the girl retracted her statements. In police interviews, she said that everything she had previously claimed about the man raping and sexually abusing her was not true. It was all made up.
She stated that she had been urged and pressured by a friend to say what she did. The friend allegedly instructed her in detail on what to say so that the man would be suspected, detained, and prosecuted.
In a later interview, she partially changed that version and confused two people with the same first name. However, she maintained that she had been influenced and that she has difficulty telling the truth when someone is telling her things.

Lied also about the friend’s involvement
But the prosecutor states that the girl also lied about her friend’s alleged involvement, since phone records from her mobile could not verify that the friend encouraged her actions.
The friend has also categorically denied any involvement. Therefore, the girl is being prosecuted for aggravated false accusation against both the man and the friend.
The girl admits the crime.
