Earlier this year, Denmark seriously prepared for war against the United States. This is reported by several ‘key sources’ to Denmark’s Radio. And the threat of war against the superpower is considered not to be over as long as Trump remains in power.

It was on the morning of January 3 this year that the Danish government woke up to the news that the USA had attacked Venezuela and captured the country’s president, Nicolás Maduro.

US President Donald Trump has repeatedly threatened to take over Greenland, and the news of the attack on Venezuela brought that threat to a head. Next time, it could be Denmark’s turn.

– That’s when everything exploded, says a high-ranking source in the Danish security apparatus to DR.

Plans to Blow Up Airports

In the days following the attack on Venezuela, Trump issued more threats against Denmark and Greenland. In Copenhagen, the Danish government called a crisis meeting, and the threatened nation quickly received support from its Nordic neighbors, as well as from Germany and France.

On January 13, the Danish military received orders to immediately implement a defense plan for Greenland. The following day, an ‘advance force’ of Danish, Swedish, Norwegian, German, and French soldiers flew to Greenland. To the capital Nuuk and Kangerlussuaq.

Officially, the soldiers were said to be participating in the military exercise Arctic Endurance; a previously completely unknown exercise no one had heard of before. But among those on the first planes to Greenland, there was both explosives and blood bags—items that are not normally brought to exercises.

Explosives, in order to be able to blow up the runways in Nuuk and Kangerlussuaq if American planes approached unannounced. It shouldn’t be that easy for the Americans to take over the island by just flying in their planes.

Blood bags, to be able to treat the wounded in case of a possible war.

Most Acute Threat Since World War II

As Denmark was building up the defense of Greenland—which was described as the most acute military threat to the country since World War II—Trump continued to make menacing statements.

On January 19, a Danish ‘main force’ landed, consisting of, among others, special forces, cavalry soldiers, and engineer troops.

The Danish fighter jets that were hastily sent to Greenland were armed with live ammunition, not training missiles, to be able to defend the island.

The Danish national media channel spoke to twelve ‘central sources’ within the Danish government, the Danish military, and among Denmark’s allies. All described how Denmark was, in earnest, preparing for war against the USA this January.

The aim was to make an attack as costly and deterring as possible. And to have troops from several European countries on site, so that any American attack would not only involve Denmark.

The French Eager for War

Not least, the French were said to be prepared to send troops—a smaller battalion. They reportedly also offered the Danes to send more soldiers, fighter jets, and naval vessels.

But would the European allies really have gone to war against the USA if it had come to that, wonders DR.

– That’s a question I’m very glad we didn’t have to answer, says a German top official, who also doesn’t know how concrete the US’s attack plans were or are.

Right now, the USA is fully occupied with a war against Iran. But the threat to Greenland, and Denmark, remains.

– This is not over. Donald Trump has three years left. And no matter what happens, suspicion and the threat to the Commonwealth will remain as long as he has made up his mind to be remembered for expanding US territory, a Danish source tells DR.
