The fact that a national Salafist campaign is linked to the fundraising to build a mosque on Frösön recently generated headlines. The group “Vi mår bra” aims to build a mosque in every Swedish city, and after the revelation, the municipality has turned to Säpo. Now, Richard Jomshof (SD) warns of the naivety that prevails in Sweden regarding Islam and the ambitions of its followers.
Despite the fact that Säpo for several years has identified the anti-democratic and violent Islamist environment as the greatest security threat to Sweden, municipality after municipality chooses to ignore the warnings and allows the construction of full-scale mosques—often with questionable funding and connections to Islamist organizations and countries, writes Jomshof in an op-ed.
The fact that mosques in Sweden are being used to promote extremism, spread anti-democratic values, glorify terrorist groups, and even serve as foreign intelligence centers is nothing new. They often have connections to countries such as Turkey, Libya, the United Arab Emirates, Iran, Kuwait, Oman, and Pakistan.

There are also connections to Saudi Arabia and Qatar, which endorse literalist Salafism, the most extreme and literal form of Islamic interpretations within Sunni Islam.
Increased Segregation
The project on Frösön and the group behind it have ideological roots precisely in Saudi Arabian Salafism. There, a property has been bought that will be converted into a mosque with youth activities, something Jomshof does not believe will benefit Swedish society:
We are talking about the Swedish composer Wilhelm Peterson-Berger’s Frösön, which is now to be defiled by a Salafist mosque. Children and young people will be taught what is called “sound Islamic faith”: study circles in dogmatics, Islamic jurisprudence, and Quranic interpretation. The result risks being an environment where integration is replaced by strict religious indoctrination, which will further increase segregation and exclusion.
Jomshof further points out that a central figure in the campaign is Ramsis “Moosa” Assal, known as “The Medina Student” with tens of thousands of followers. Assal is educated at the ultra-conservative university in Medina and during a visit to Frösön described the location as ideal for a mosque.

Stop it before it’s too late
These Islamist and anti-democratic forces constitute a direct threat to Swedish democracy and the values it stands on, Jomshof warns, arguing that it is high time to put a stop to the ongoing Islamization before it is too late.
The government should also introduce a national ban on foreign funding of mosque construction and withdraw support for organizations that place religious law above Swedish democracy. Sweden is a democratic country, and that principle requires a far more active defense against the forces that clearly want to take democracy away from us.
