The Trump administration is halting federal funding for so-called trans care for children and adolescents.

The new rule will take effect on October 13 and means that treatments such as puberty blockers, hormones, and surgical interventions will no longer be financed through the two public health insurance programs.

However, this is not a general ban on these treatments. States can still choose to use their own funds to finance the care. Mental healthcare for children is also not affected by the new rule and can continue to receive federal funding.

The Trump administration refers to a review of national and international research conducted by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. According to the authorities, the review points to significant knowledge gaps and documented safety issues.

Furthermore, the U.S. government therefore considers that the scientific support for gender-affirming care for children and adolescents is insufficient to justify funding with federal tax dollars. This is reported by CNBC.

President Donald Trump has also linked the decision to this fall’s midterm elections. In a post on Truth Social, he urged voters to remember the change when they go to the polls in November.
