The conflict between Tesla and IF Metall continues to make headlines – and once again the electric car manufacturer has emerged victorious in court. After this new defeat, the union is forced to pay even more substantial legal costs and is now approaching one million kronor in expenses related to its legal battles with Tesla.
The Labor Court has delivered its verdict in the case concerning Tesla’s operations in Uppsala, where the union accused the company of violating rules regarding the duty to inform and negotiate according to the Swedish Co-Determination Act.
However, the court does not believe that IF Metall managed to show that Tesla was obligated to call for negotiations during the relevant period in spring 2024. Thus, the company is acquitted of all charges.

This is the second time in a short period that Tesla’s Swedish company has won against IF Metall in the Labor Court. In a previous case concerning operations in Malmö, the verdict also went in Tesla’s favor, though the court was not unanimous that time. In the new decision regarding Uppsala, however, the members were in full agreement.

The conflict between the parties has now been ongoing for more than two and a half years and is described as the longest labor market dispute in Sweden in a century. During this time, strikes, blockades, and lawsuits have followed one another, while the relationship between Tesla and the union has become increasingly strained.
800,000 kronor
For IF Metall, the verdict also means a financial setback. The union had demanded 100,000 kronor in damages from the American electric car giant but must now instead pay Tesla’s legal costs of about 500,000 kronor in this case.
Together with costs from the previous dispute in Malmö, the legal proceedings have so far cost the union around 800,000 kronor.
