The Swedish men’s national team has had a strong start in the UEFA Nations League 2026/27. After a 2–1 win against Romania and a 3–1 victory over Poland, Blågult (the Blue and Yellow) tops League B, Group 4, with a perfect points tally and a goal difference of 5–2. Bosnia and Herzegovina are second with four points. Tonight, Sweden faces its first away game, against Bosnia in Zenica, without Isak in the squad.
On Friday, September 25, Sweden won the Nations League opener at home at Strawberry Arena in Solna with 2–1 against Romania. Alexander Isak scored 1–0 in the 20th minute before Dennis Man equalized. Viktor Gyökeres clinched the win with 2–1 just before halftime.
On September 27, the national team announced that Isak would leave the squad because of a minor injury. Sweden’s head coach, Englishman Graham Potter, described the issue as a small thigh problem that arose during the Romania match and became more noticeable afterward.
The national team’s medical team communicated with Liverpool, but the decision to let Isak leave was made by the Swedish side. No replacement was called up. As a result, Isak will miss the remainder of the October window.
Three more points against Poland
Even without Isak, Sweden continued their strong form. On Monday, September 28, they beat Poland 3–1 at home in front of over 24,600 spectators. Benjamin Nygren, Yasin Ayari, and once again Gyökeres scored the goals. Sebastian Szymański pulled one back for Poland.
Six points from two matches and the lead in the group was the outcome after the opening home weekend.
What the Nations League means
The Nations League is UEFA’s national team tournament held between the European Championship and World Cup cycles. Teams are divided into leagues with promotion and relegation. Sweden plays in League B, Group 4, along with Bosnia and Herzegovina, Poland, and Romania.
In the 2026/27 edition, the group winner advances directly to League A. The runner-up goes to the promotion playoff, the third-place team stays put, and the fourth-placed team plays a relegation playoff.
