Speaker of the Parliament Andreas Norlén has decided, after new talks with the parties, to once again give the Social Democrat leader Magdalena Andersson the task of investigating the possibility of forming a government.

She returned the mandate on Monday after the path forward was deemed closed.

– Based on the conversations I’ve had, I have decided that Magdalena Andersson will continue her negotiating assignment, Norlén said at the press conference.

The negotiations will formally begin on Monday, giving the parties the weekend to reflect. Andersson must deliver a final report or request an extension by Monday, October 12 at the latest. After that, a parliamentary vote for prime minister will take place.

Norlén stated that the fundamental political and parliamentary conditions remain the same as when Andersson was first given the assignment, and that it is therefore reasonable for her to resume the work.

Andersson returned the negotiating mandate on Monday after an unsuccessful attempt. According to media reports, the firm demands from the Centre Party and the Left Party were a central sticking point. The Left Party had also announced it would vote for the Moderate Andreas Norlén as Speaker, something which also turned out to be true.

Andersson now welcomes the news that she is being given the assignment again.

– I welcome the Speaker’s message and over the weekend I will consider how I can move the process forward.
