Earlier this week, Samnytt reported on a new survey showing that young people are becoming more negative towards LGBTQ individuals, with this phenomenon being twice as common among immigrants. A Social Democrat tried to score political points from the news, but it didn’t go as planned.

The Forum for Living History has examined students’ attitudes towards various minority groups. The survey was conducted by Statistics Sweden and included over 8,000 students in 9th grade and in the first and third years of upper secondary school. The results are presented in the report Youth’s Opinions About Others: A Study of Students’ Attitudes, Trust, and Vulnerability. The study shows an increase in intolerance towards minority groups compared to the last survey in 2013.

Students with foreign backgrounds show significantly more negative attitudes toward sexual minorities than students with Swedish backgrounds. Among students born abroad, 21.2 percent hold negative attitudes towards sexual minorities. Among students born in Sweden to foreign-born parents, the figure is 22.6 percent, while among students born in Sweden to Swedish-born parents, the proportion is 12.1 percent.
