After Simona Mohamsson took the Liberals out of the political sandbox and paved the way for a more pragmatic approach to the political situation, support for the party has increased. Now it turns out that the agreement with the Sweden Democrats has also led to a significant boost in confidence in the party leader.

In mid-March, the Sweden Democrats and the Liberals held a joint press conference. There, respective party leaders, Jimmie Åkesson and Simona Mohamsson, announced that they had agreed on how they would “jointly take responsibility for Sweden in a future government.” This revealed that the Liberals had completely shifted their stance towards the Sweden Democrats.

After having long been well below the parliamentary threshold, support for the Liberals increased by two percentage points in Demoskop’s March poll, reaching 4.5 percent. Simona Mohamsson also reported a large influx of new members.

Already in March, a clear rise in voters’ confidence in Mohamsson could be seen—from six to ten percent. When April’s poll was presented on Friday, confidence in Mohamsson had almost doubled again, now standing at 19 percent.

– It’s an unusually large shift. We rarely see such big increases, says Johan Martinsson, head of opinion at Demoskop.

At the same time, Martinsson points out that the rise in confidence is only among voters of the Tidö parties, while it is declining in the opposition.

At the top is Magdalena Andersson (S), closely followed by Jimmie Åkesson (SD) and then Ulf Kristersson (M).
