Sverigedemokraterna’s spokesperson on police matters, Katja Nyberg—herself a former police officer—has reportedly been caught driving under the influence. She denies the allegations herself.
Katja Nyberg has been a member of parliament for the Sweden Democrats since 2018 and is on leave from her regular job as a police officer. She is also a member of the Committee on Justice and, since 2021, the party’s spokesperson on police issues.
The state television broadcaster and Aftonbladet claim that Nyberg was arrested for drunk driving in Värmdö Municipality on December 28, and that during a body search a bag with two grams of suspected cocaine was allegedly found. Her driver’s license is said to be revoked as well.
The Special Prosecutor’s Office confirms that it is handling a suspected drunk driving case concerning a member of parliament, but does not wish to disclose who it is.
Denies the allegations
In a written comment to SVT, however, Nyberg says something quite different:
During the days between Christmas and New Year, I was involved in a wildlife collision with my car. In connection with this, I had to go down to the police station and take a breathalyzer test for alcohol, which showed no result. It is therefore with great surprise that I read what is now being written about me and this incident. The Special Investigations Unit is now looking into this, which I welcome, since I do not recognize myself in this.
According to SD’s press secretary Oskar Cavalli-Björkman, they take the information seriously and will follow developments closely.
