The Dutch debater and migration-critical activist Eva Vlaardingerbroek has launched a new European initiative with the goal of putting remigration on the EU’s political agenda.

The initiative, named the Save Europe Act, was presented at the Remigration Summit in Porto, Portugal on May 30. The campaign seeks to gather at least one million signatures from EU citizens in order to force the European Commission to address the proposal via the European Citizens’ Initiative system.

According to the initiators, a major shift in Europe’s migration policy is needed. The Save Europe Act advocates, among other things, for stricter border controls, reduced immigration from non-European countries, and measures to promote the return of migrants who do not have the right to remain in member states.

The launch took place at a conference that brought together migration-critical activists, politicians, and commentators from several European countries. The event also sparked counter-demonstrations in Porto and has received widespread attention in European media.

Critics describe remigration as a concept rooted in identitarian and far-right politics, while proponents emphasize that it concerns legal and orderly return processes.

The Goal: One Million Signatures

In order for a European Citizens’ Initiative to succeed, at least one million valid signatures from citizens of the EU member states are required. If the threshold is met, the European Commission is obliged to process the issue and give a formal response, though it is not required to propose new legislation.

The Save Europe Act is still in an early stage, and it remains to be seen if the initiative will garner enough support to be addressed at the EU level.

The debate comes at a time when migration issues are high on the EU’s agenda. In recent years, the Union has adopted several reforms in the areas of migration and asylum, while questions about returns, border controls, and illegal migration continue to be politically contentious among member states.

By Tuesday morning, more than 100,000 people had signed the petition.
