The member of parliament, who has held prominent roles in both the party and the Riksdag, has ended all political assignments after becoming the subject of an ongoing criminal investigation concerning child pornography offenses. Samnytt can reveal that it is the Sweden Democrat veteran Michael Rubbestad.
The background to the police investigation is information forwarded to Swedish authorities by the US-based National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC). The organization regularly relays tips about suspected child sexual offenses to law enforcement agencies worldwide.
The ongoing criminal investigation against the MP gained momentum in April and is being led by the Special Prosecutor’s Office. Last week, he was summoned for questioning but was released afterwards.

During the investigation, several electronic devices belonging to the politician have been seized for further analysis. The case files indicate that the matter includes contact with foreign authorities as well.
In recent days, multiple media outlets have reported that the suspect is an MP with several major assignments both within his party and in the Riksdag.
Samnytt can now disclose that it is Michael Rubbestad, who is a full member of parliament, first deputy group leader for the Sweden Democrats, and a member of the Constitutional Committee.

Resigned Without Explanation
Samnytt has been in contact with the Riksdag, which states that Michael Rubbestad announced his resignation on Tuesday. No further explanation for the sudden resignation has been given.
“Hereby, I resign my position as a member of the Swedish parliament,” the SD veteran stated.
Samnytt has also reached out to both Michael Rubbestad and the Sweden Democrats for comment.
