Nurse Andreas has been charged with raping an unconscious woman in her 70s who was receiving palliative care at Ryhov County Hospital in Jönköping. A colleague interrupted the assault – and the woman died that same night. Afterwards, he fled the scene in a frenzied drive that ended in a violent crash.

It was on August 8 this year that nurse Andreas Viktor Nord, 41, along with two colleagues, was working a routine night shift in a ward at Ryhov County Hospital in Jönköping.

On the ward was a woman in her 70s who was unconscious and receiving palliative care – that is, end-of-life care.

Shortly after eating, Nord reportedly had a sudden impulse. He decided to go into the elderly patient’s room, took off his shirt, pulled down his pants, and removed her diaper. He then lay on top of the woman – skin to skin – and started to “move.”

“He is fairly certain that he did not penetrate her, but he was on top of the patient, and it was skin to skin,” police interviews with Nord reveal.

“He is erect”

In the middle of the rape, he was interrupted by a colleague who suddenly appeared in the doorway.

“Her first thought is that he’s there to adjust the patient’s position. She asks Andreas what he is doing and when he turns around, she sees his penis. She notices that he is erect,” police interviews with the colleague state.

Nord then panicked. He immediately admitted that “it was stupid” and claimed it had never happened before, also asking her to call the police.

But during the call, he told 112 that he couldn’t live with what he had done and that he would take his own life to “protect his children from having a rapist as a father.” He then went to the locker room, changed clothes, and disappeared from the scene in his car.

Wild police chase

The police caught up with Nord and made several unsuccessful attempts to stop him. He refused to pull over.

“The chase continued out onto the E4 northbound and the white Volvo increased speed to about 140 km/h. At one point, I was driving the police car at around 150 km/h, keeping a steady distance to the white Volvo,” the police report states.

Near the roundabout at Ekhagen in Jönköping, Nord suddenly swerved and, according to the police report, appeared to aim for a concrete barrier. The police braked hard and saw only a cloud of dust in front of the car.

They got out of the car and approached the now crashed white Volvo, opened the door, and were surprised to see no one in the driver’s seat. Nord had ended up in the back seat after the heavy impact. He was then taken to the hospital for treatment of his injuries.

The woman died the same night

Less than six hours after the rape, at about 5:30 in the morning on August 9, the woman died. However, a forensic examination showed that her death was caused by her underlying illness, and the suspected assault was not deemed to have hastened her death.

During the investigation, police secured technical evidence that the prosecutor claims links the nurse to the crime. Among other things, the man’s DNA was found on the woman’s diaper, while DNA from the woman was found on the man’s penis.

Now, senior prosecutor Frida Noldin has brought charges against Andreas Viktor Nord for one count of aggravated rape and one count of gross negligence in traffic.

According to the prosecutor, the rape should be considered aggravated because Nord showed particular ruthlessness or brutality. She further states that Nord abused his position as a nurse and that the crime was directed at a patient completely incapable of defending herself.

According to the indictment, Nord acknowledges the sequence of events but claims it amounted to aggravated sexual assault. He also admits to the circumstances surrounding the recklessness but has denied the crime in interviews.
