A new cold record for March has been measured at the Vostok research station in Antarctica: -76.3 degrees Celsius. This extremely low temperature, the lowest ever recorded in the world during the month of March, was noted on Tuesday this week.
Canadian The weather network is one of several meteorology and weather-oriented sites highlighting the extremely low temperature at the Russian research station, which is located about 1,300 kilometers from the better-known Amundsen-Scott station at the South Pole.
The previous March record, -75.7 degrees Celsius, was measured at another research station in Antarctica: Japan’s Dome Fuji in 2013.
Vostok also holds the record for the lowest temperature ever measured on Earth: -89.2 degrees Celsius on July 21, 1983.
Since Antarctica is located in the Southern Hemisphere, it is summer there when it is winter in Sweden, and vice versa. So, it is currently early autumn in Antarctica, and temperatures will continue to drop in the coming months.
