Yaquelin Pulido Moreno, who until the election campaign represented the Left Party in local politics in Upplands Väsby and previously expressed that she wanted to murder SD supporters, could not tolerate the Sweden Democrats’ election posters in Stockholm. She perceived them as a personal insult and armed herself with a window scraper with an exposed razor blade to cut down and tear up the party’s election placards in the middle of Sergels torg. Now, the 29-year-old local politician is convicted of minor damage and violation of the knife law – escaping with a fine of 42,000 kronor.
It happened in broad daylight on August 19, just under a month before the election. A police patrol had been assigned to monitor public order during the election campaign and drove along Klarabergsgatan in central Stockholm.
At Sergels torg, the officers spotted a woman by the railing. She was tearing down and cutting up Sweden Democrats’ election posters. The woman would turn out to be Yaquelin Aida Pulido Moreno, 29, Left Party politician in Upplands Väsby.
According to a police report, twelve election placards were torn down. The preliminary investigation states not only the economic damage but also that the action affected the Sweden Democrats’ opportunity “to get their political message out during the election campaign.”
Police Saw Her Tear Down the Posters
The police stopped the car and approached her. Parts of the incident were captured on one of the officers’ body cameras. When police grabbed Pulido Moreno, the patrol discovered she was holding a window scraper with an exposed razor blade in her left hand. She had also cut her right index finger and was bleeding. The officers helped her bandage the wound.
At the scene, according to the police’s memo, she explained her actions by saying that she considered the Sweden Democrats to be Nazis. She was then taken to a police van at Sergels torg for questioning.

There, she said that her original plan for the day had been much less dramatic. She had taken the commuter train to Stockholm “to have an ice cream and walk around a bit.”
When the questions turned to why she had targeted the SD posters in particular, she initially refused to answer. On being asked if anything on the posters had provoked her, she said they were offensive because they “contained Nazi messages.” “The Sweden Democrats themselves,” she said, were offensive, and the party consisted of Nazis.
Always Carries the Razor Scraper in Her Bag
The Left Party politician became more talkative when police asked about the scraper. She stated that she usually carried it with her to remove messages she herself deemed Nazi or racist. According to the interrogation, she “almost always” had the scraper in her bag and had brought it from home.
Pulido Moreno also stated that she knew about the knife law but had gotten the idea that possession was permitted as long as the blade did not exceed nine centimeters. After the preliminary investigation, she also returned on her own initiative with a written explanation. There she elaborated that the scraper was especially used to remove Nazi stickers that could be stuck on tightly and were therefore hard to remove with nails or keys.
She also argued that the same principle should apply to the Sweden Democrats’ election posters. Since she herself viewed the message as racist, she believed it should not count as damage to remove the placards. The district court saw it differently.
“Because They Want to Kill Me”
When the case later reached Stockholm District Court, Pulido Moreno explained that the SD posters felt like a personal insult to her. She described herself as a child of an immigrant and claimed that the Sweden Democrats practice dehumanization and promote a message no different from the old campaign group Keep Sweden Swedish.
When police intervened, she was also asked why the posters stirred up such strong feelings. According to her own account in court, her spontaneous answer was:
– Because they want to kill me.
Pulido Moreno admitted in court that she had both torn and cut down the posters. However, she argued that any financial harm was improbable, as the posters, according to her, were back in place about half an hour later.
Officer Andreas Emilsson gave a different account. He stated that Pulido Moreno said in the police van that she carried the scraper to be able to tear down or cut up SD posters or other posters with messages she considered Nazi.
District Court: The Posters Were Damaged
Pulido Moreno formally denied both crimes. Concerning the posters, she claimed her action could at most be considered unlawful dispossession.
However, the court noted that photographs showed the posters’ hanging fixtures had been torn apart. Accordingly, their function was sufficiently damaged for the act to be regarded as criminal damage.
The court also did not accept her political motives as grounds for exoneration. She was therefore convicted of minor criminal damage.
The window scraper also led to a conviction. The district court described it as a sharp and fairly robust object, comparable to a box cutter. The fact that Pulido Moreno managed to cut herself with it also impacted the risk assessment.
The court explicitly noted that nothing indicated she intended to harm anyone with the object. But because she carried it in a crowded place and actually used it to commit damage, possession could not be considered justified or as a minor violation of the knife law.
42,000 Kronor in Fines
The penalty was set at 120 day fines of 350 kronor each – totaling 42,000 kronor. Additionally, Pulido Moreno must pay 1,000 kronor to the crime victims’ fund.
The window scraper, which she claimed during the investigation, will be forfeited. The court considered the knife offense more serious than the democracy offense against SD and it should mainly determine the penalty. The judges were unanimous in this.
Harsher Penalty for Poster Offense Possible
The prosecutor chose to charge Pulido Moreno with minor criminal damage even though the act occurred in the midst of an election campaign, was specifically directed at a political party’s opinion formation, and according to the initial police documentation involved twelve election placards and was an action that affected the Sweden Democrats’ opportunity “to get their political message out during the election campaign.”
There is no special crime classification for tearing down election posters. Police have also pointed out during this year’s election campaign that such actions, depending on circumstances, may be considered criminal damage, theft, or unlawful dispossession.
But minor criminal damage is not the only conceivable classification. Standard criminal damage carries a harsher penalty, and in a high-profile 2014 case where two people tore down SD posters just before the election, they were convicted of criminal damage. According to a legal review, the court at that time emphasized that the action was directed at free opinion formation, in contrast to how the current district court saw the possession of the window scraper as the more serious matter.
Previous Threats Against SD Members: “You Kill Them”
The incident at Sergels torg also has a background in Pulido Moreno’s previous actions against the Sweden Democrats. As Samnytt previously reported, she has had a political assignment for the Left Party in the education committee in Upplands Väsby.

At a political meeting in the municipality, she was caught on video walking around with a Palestinian flag and a whistle, confronting a 16-year-old functionary from the SD youth league. She accused the young woman of belonging to a Nazi party and then said:
– Do you know what you do with racists? You kill them.

Pulido Moreno was later removed from the scene by police. There is nothing in the material reviewed by Samnytt indicating any legal repercussions from that incident. In the current case, she is described as previously without a criminal record.

This at the same time creates a distinct contrast to her explanation in district court after tearing down the posters: that she herself perceived the Sweden Democrats’ messages as threatening and had explained her actions to police by saying:
– Because they want to kill me.
