Healthcare Worker Detained for Aggravated Rape of Dying Patient

A 40-year-old man employed as a nurse at Ryhov County Hospital in Jönköping has been detained, suspected of aggravated rape against a female patient who was in end-of-life care. A colleague raised the alarm after making observations in the patient’s room. The nurse then fled the hospital by car—and after a dramatic police chase, he crashed violently into a concrete barrier. The woman died shortly after the suspected assault.

The sequence of events began late in the evening on August 8 at Ryhov County Hospital in Jönköping. A female patient was being cared for in one of the hospital’s medical clinics. She was at the end of her life and, according to the prosecutor, was completely unable to defend herself.

During the evening, another employee at the hospital made observations of a male nurse in the woman’s room. What the colleague saw led to the police being alerted. The nurse then hastily left his workplace.

Fled from the Hospital—Police Gave Chase

The man got into a car and drove away from the hospital grounds. Around midnight, the police tried to get him to stop, but the driver chose to flee instead. A car chase began in the vicinity of the A6 area in Jönköping.

The chase was short but dramatic. Near the Ekhagen roundabout, the escape came to an abrupt end when the car crashed into a concrete barrier. Initial reports described a severe accident where the car suffered extensive damage and had to be towed. According to SVT, the car rolled over during the crash.

The man was taken by ambulance to the hospital. The Prosecutor’s Office later stated that he sustained only minor injuries.

When media first reported on the police chase on August 9, the background of the pursuit was not made public. A few days later, it became clear that the driver was the hospital employee suspected of committing a sexual offense against a patient.

Patient Died Shortly After the Incident

The woman whom the nurse is suspected of assaulting died a very short time after the incident. Her death has therefore been part of the subsequent investigation. According to the prosecutor, the preliminary assessment by the forensic pathologist is that the woman died due to the illness she already suffered from.

So far, there is no indication that her death was caused by the suspected sexual assault. At the same time, the suspicion has been heightened and become more specific during the investigation. What was initially described as a suspected sexual offense is now classified as aggravated rape.

Senior Prosecutor Frida Noldin, who leads the preliminary investigation, considers the circumstances regarding the patient’s condition and the nurse’s professional role to make the crime particularly serious.

– I assess that the nurse demonstrated particular ruthlessness or cruelty, since the crime was committed while the woman was in end-of-life care, completely unable to defend herself, and the man exploited his position as a nurse, she says.

Released After Being Detained

The nurse was deprived of his liberty after the incident and was in custody for a time. But on August 12, the detention order was lifted, and the man was released. When Frida Noldin commented on the case for SVT the following day, she had recently taken over the investigation and did not want to specify exactly which sexual crime the man was suspected of. The suspicions against him remained even though he had been released.

At the same time, Region Jönköping County launched its own investigation to clarify what had happened, how it could occur, and what measures could be taken to prevent similar events. The man, who according to the region had been employed for a long time, was suspended from his job.

Colleagues Describe Him as Reliable and Competent

The police investigation continued in the following weeks. Several of the nurse’s colleagues have been questioned. The image of the man that emerges from their accounts sharply contrasts with the crime he is now suspected of. According to the Prosecutor’s Office, colleagues described him as a reliable and skilled nurse.

The man himself has also been questioned on a couple of occasions. He has given his version of events at the hospital and, according to the prosecutor, has made some admissions. Exactly what he has admitted has not been made public.

The investigators continue to conduct witness interviews and are awaiting the results of forensic analysis. The prosecutor states that so far, there is no information indicating that the nurse committed crimes against other patients.

The Region Reported the Nurse to Ivo

Parallel to the criminal investigation, the incident has had consequences within Region Jönköping County. On August 19, it was announced that the region filed an individual report to the Health and Social Care Inspectorate (Ivo) due to the suspicions.

Such a report means that Ivo will assess whether a licensed professional poses a risk to patient safety. The region has also continued its own patient safety investigation, including whether the incident should also be reported under lex Maria.

– We need to review the incident and our routines to determine if it should be reported under Lex Maria. It is still unclear how long the investigation will take. Due to patient confidentiality, we cannot provide further information, said Chief Medical Officer Eva-Lena Enell to SVT.

The Prosecutor Requested the Man’s Detention

After more than a week of continued investigation, the prosecutor decided to again seek to have the man deprived of liberty—this time by requesting his detention.

The prosecutor pointed to the seriousness of the crime as well as the risk that the man, if released, could affect the investigation. According to the prosecutor’s assessment, there was also a risk that he would abscond or otherwise evade prosecution or any potential punishment.

On Friday, a detention hearing was held at Jönköping District Court. The 40-year-old nurse, who has a Swedish background, was detained on suspicion of aggravated rape.

The preliminary investigation now continues with further witness interviews and forensic analysis. Among other things, it remains to clarify in more detail what happened in the patient’s room on that August evening.
