A Christian preacher was attacked at Speakers’ Corner in Hyde Park, central London, on Sunday. A man has been arrested on suspicion of assault after the preacher was knocked to the ground and suffered facial injuries during a religious debate.

According to several eyewitness accounts, the incident occurred during a public discussion between Christian and Muslim participants at the well-known site. Footage from the scene shows a fight breaking out before the preacher is attacked. Police and ambulance were called to the area and the injured man received medical care at the scene.

The Metropolitan Police later confirmed that a suspect had been arrested. At the time of reporting, police had not yet released any details about the suspect’s identity or a possible motive behind the attack.

Speakers’ Corner has long been a place for lively debates on religion, politics, and social issues. In recent years, however, the area has become known for recurring conflicts between different religious groups, particularly in connection with debates about Islam and Christianity. Several high-profile incidents have occurred in which Christian preachers have been subjected to threats or violence.

The most well-known of these incidents involved the Turkish-British preacher Hatun Tash, who regularly debates Islam at Speakers’ Corner. She was stabbed in the face and hand during a sermon in the summer of 2021 after becoming a target for threats due to her criticism of religion. The perpetrator was never identified.

In 2023, then-21-year-old Edward Little was also convicted for planning a terrorist attack at the same site. According to court documents, he intended to acquire firearms and murder Hatun Tash, her camera crew, and police officers in the area. He was later sentenced to a long prison term.

The latest attack has once again sparked debate about safety at Speakers’ Corner and how freedom of expression can be maintained at a site historically associated with open public debate. Police are continuing their investigation and have urged anyone who witnessed the incident to come forward with information.
