The number of children and young people with neuropsychiatric disabilities (NPF diagnoses) is increasing sharply and now the government wants to find out why.
More and more children and young people are being diagnosed with neuropsychiatric disorders, especially ADHD and autism, and the government considers it important to clarify which factors are behind the increase. Therefore, a delegation is now being appointed with the assignment to investigate this.
In addition to investigating the causes, the delegation will also analyze society’s capacity to provide good and equal living conditions and participation for children and young people with neuropsychiatric disabilities and their families, and propose measures to strengthen and develop this capacity.

– When more and more children and young people receive a neuropsychiatric diagnosis, we need to get a comprehensive picture of what is driving this development. This is necessary in order to take action that ensures that children and young people in Sweden have the conditions needed for a good life. Today, there are too many challenges regarding support and accommodations, says Minister for Social Affairs Jakob Forssmed (Christian Democrats).
– A diagnosis should never determine the opportunities a child has in life. Children and young people with neuropsychiatric disabilities and their relatives often face challenges when dealing with schools, healthcare, and social services. By appointing this delegation, we are taking a comprehensive approach to strengthen society’s support and create better conditions for participation, security, and good living conditions throughout the country, says Minister for Social Services Camilla Waltersson Grönvall (Moderate Party).
The inquiry will be led by Mathias Wahlsten, Director General and Head of the Swedish Unemployment Insurance Inspectorate (IAF).
