On Monday, the highly publicized legal proceedings begin against 23-year-old Tyler Robinson, the man accused of murdering the conservative American commentator Charlie Kirk during a public appearance in Utah in September last year.

The five-day preliminary hearing is expected to be the most significant stage yet in a case that has shaken American politics and reignited the debate about political violence in the US. The hearing is being held in Provo, Utah.

Prosecutors will present evidence they claim demonstrates sufficient grounds to put Robinson on trial for aggravated murder. If the judge finds the evidence compelling, the case will proceed to a full trial, where the prosecution has already announced it will seek the death penalty.

According to court documents, prosecutors are expected to present surveillance footage, DNA evidence, witness testimonies, autopsy results, as well as messages and notes that allegedly directly link Robinson to the murder. Among the evidence, according to prosecutors, is an alleged confession in a message to someone close to him, along with technical evidence indicating Robinson’s DNA was found on the weapon and ammunition.

The Suspect Meets the Victim’s Family for the First Time

For the first time since the murder, Charlie Kirk’s widow Erika Kirk as well as his parents are expected to be present in the courtroom together with the accused. The court has decided to allow TV cameras during much of the hearing, although certain pieces of evidence will be restricted to prevent influencing a future jury trial.

Prosecutors have also warned the family that parts of the evidence are expected to be highly graphic, including video material from the shooting and photographs from the autopsy.

Shot During a Public Event

Charlie Kirk was killed on September 10, 2025, during an outdoor event at Utah Valley University where he participated in a political discussion organized by the conservative organization Turning Point USA.

According to the investigation, a shot was fired from a distance that struck Kirk in the neck in front of thousands of spectators. He was transported to the hospital but died shortly thereafter from his injuries.

A massive police manhunt ensued before Tyler Robinson turned himself in about 33 hours later. According to American media, his parents recognized him in the surveillance images released to the public and helped ensure he surrendered without incident.

Robinson has yet to formally enter a plea of guilty or not guilty to the charges. His defense has instead tried to have some evidence dismissed and has opposed aspects of the prosecution’s handling of the case.

Who Was Charlie Kirk?

Charlie Kirk became one of the most influential figures on the American right during the 2010s and 2020s. In 2012, he founded Turning Point USA, an organization that grew to become one of the largest conservative student networks in the US, operating at hundreds of universities and high schools. The organization worked to promote conservative ideas among young voters and became a central part of the broader conservative movement in the US.

Kirk was a close ally of President Donald Trump and a frequent commentator on issues such as immigration, freedom of speech, education, identity politics, and the culture wars. He was also the host of one of America’s largest conservative podcasts and regularly toured American universities to debate students and political opponents.

At the same time, he was seen as a highly polarizing figure by some. Supporters viewed him as a fearless defender of conservative values and free speech, while critics accused him of contributing to increased political polarization.

At the time of his death, Kirk was only 31 years old but had already established himself as one of the most influential voices on the American right.

A Case With Great Political Significance

The murder of Charlie Kirk sparked strong reactions across the United States and was described by many as one of the most high-profile cases of suspected politically motivated lethal violence in many years.

President Donald Trump has previously expressed hope that the suspect will be sentenced to death if convicted. At the same time, the case has become a symbol of increasing political polarization in the US and growing concern that political disagreements are increasingly leading to violence.

The preliminary hearing now underway is expected to last all week. If the judge determines that the prosecution has shown probable cause, the case will proceed to a full-scale murder trial later this year or at the beginning of next year.
