The Social Democrats’ party secretary Tobias Baudin says that the party wants to abolish the quantity discount for criminals. But when parliament takes up the issue as soon as next week, the Social Democrats have announced they will vote no.

It was on X that Tobias Baudin announced with pride that the Social Democrats now want to remove the quantity discount for multiple offenses—a sentencing discount they never abolished during their decades in power, despite proposals from the Sweden Democrats.

“It’s time to take security seriously! We are running in the election to abolish the quantity discount for serious crimes.” he wrote on August 7 on X.

But the issue is about to be addressed in parliament, as soon as next week. The government’s proposition being voted on concerns, among other things, new regulations on sentencing for multiple offenses. The idea is that those who commit many crimes should not receive increasingly larger “discounts” the longer their list of offenses becomes.

But ahead of the vote, the Social Democrats, in direct contradiction to what Baudin writes on X, have submitted a motion with a very simple proposal: “Parliament rejects the proposition.”

The Social Democrats propose rejection

They are therefore not proposing an amendment to the bill but rejecting the entire proposal outright. Nor are they proposing an exception specifically for the quantity discount.

This directly contradicts what the Social Democrats’ party secretary is telling voters on social media, since the party’s members of parliament, in a few days, will vote to stop a tangible proposal that would toughen sentences for repeat offenders.

Harsh Criticism

The criticism under Baudin’s post is harsh. Many note that the Social Democrats will indeed vote no. Markus Wiechel, a member of parliament, calls it “the height of hypocrisy.” Citizen journalist Nick Alinia writes that the Social Democrats are “shameless, disgusting liars.”

Anders Persson believes they deserve to go to the deepest part of hell for their “shameless deceit.” Jan Berg calls them “worse than Baghdad Bob.”
