Commander-in-Chief Michael Claesson has been awarded the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense’s highest distinction, the Cross of Special Merit. The award was presented during a ceremony at the Commandant’s Staff in Stockholm, making him the first—and so far only—Swede to receive it.

The prize is given to military personnel, employees of Ukraine’s Armed Forces, and other individuals who have made particularly significant contributions to strengthening the country’s defense capabilities, saving lives, or in other ways contributed to efforts of decisive importance for Ukraine’s defense.

The motivation highlights the Supreme Commander’s and the Swedish Armed Forces’ support for Ukraine during the ongoing war as a central factor.

“I receive this award with humility. At the same time, my thoughts go to the suffering of the Ukrainian people, the ongoing struggle, and the sacrifices made every day,” says Michael Claesson.

He also emphasizes that the distinction is not just individual, but reflects a broader Swedish commitment:

“This is not only my award. In practice, it is shared by all the coworkers and colleagues who have contributed to Sweden’s support for Ukraine since the start of the war. I will wear it with pride, but also with continued responsibility.”

Claesson also underscores Sweden’s ongoing commitment to Ukraine for an indefinite period.

“We feel a strong sense of solidarity with the Ukrainian people and your ongoing struggle. Sweden will stand by your side and continue to support Ukraine for as long as it takes.”

The award was presented in Stockholm by Ukraine’s Ambassador Svetlana Zalishchuk together with Ukraine’s Defense Attaché Serhii Harbarenko.
