Sweden have secured their spot at this summer’s World Cup in North America after a dramatic decider against Poland. The match reached its climax late on—specifically in the 88th minute—when Viktor Gyökeres stepped up and clinched victory in a chaotic penalty area.

The path to victory began earlier in the match when Anthony Elanga, who plays his club football for Newcastle in England, elegantly curled in the opening goal to make it 1–0. Poland equalized, but Sweden responded through Gustaf Lagerbielke, who plays for Portuguese side SC Braga, nodding in a header for 2–1 after a well-placed setup by Celtic’s Benjamin Nygren.

After that, the match was even until the 88th minute, when Sweden fired several shots at Poland, hitting defenders and the post, before Arsenal’s star Viktor Gyökeres, whose family background is Hungarian, stepped up and slammed home a rebound for the 3-2 winner. It was his fourth goal in the playoffs to help Sweden reach the World Cup. Gyökeres is considered by many to be one of Europe’s top strikers today.

With that goal, he secured Sweden’s place in their 13th men’s World Cup, and their first since the tournament in Russia in 2018, after missing out on Qatar.

“It’s hard to put your feelings into words right now, it’s an incredible relief. We gave everything we had on the pitch, both physically and mentally,” Gyökeres told SVT, and continued:

“Of course we’re looking forward to the World Cup, it’s absolutely fantastic.”

This summer’s World Cup will be held in the USA, Mexico, and Canada. Sweden will open the tournament on June 15 against Tunisia in Monterrey, before the group stage continues with matches against the Netherlands and Japan. The last time Sweden played a World Cup in the USA was in 1994, when they famously took home bronze.
