Suddenly, the couple received a message from the municipality stating that their home care service would be withdrawn with immediate effect. Despite their advanced age, they now have to manage on their own.
On Friday, April 10th, the decision arrived in an email from Torsås Social Services Chief Johanna Fors — after April 12th, you will no longer receive home care. The municipality refers to a decision by the administrative court, claiming that the cost difference between home care and a spot in a care home is too great — 770,000 versus 504,000 kronor per year.
According to the municipality, moving to Mariahemmet could happen quickly, as they offered a place as soon as the Sunday after the decision. However, Kristina and her husband Rune declined the offer. They have recently moved into the senior housing Snödroppen, located opposite Mariahemmet, and wish to stay together.
Questions the Numbers
The couple’s daughter is upset.
“It’s terrible and unfair. My parents are doing their best to cope right now,” she tells Barometern.
She questions the numbers calculated by the municipality, believing them to be misleading, and has now applied for limited home care and appealed the decision to the Court of Appeal.
“There’s no reason for us to claim that home care is more expensive than it is or that care home accommodation is cheaper than it is. We gain nothing from that,” says Johanna Fors.
