An 88-year-old woman was left in Mölndal city center after being denied special transport service when she couldn’t pay for her ride home. The incident, reported by Mölndals-Posten, tells the story of Mona Edvardsson, who lost her payment card during a shopping trip and then found herself in a situation where she couldn’t make her way home on her own.

Mona, who has used the service for about two decades, tried several different solutions. Among other things, she suggested that her trip could be invoiced afterwards or that she be allowed to travel to a friend’s place to borrow money. According to her, all alternatives were rejected, which left her stuck in the city center waiting for help. This is reported by Mölndals-Posten.

Caught between different interpretations of the rules

After the incident, it has emerged that Mölndal municipality and Västtrafik have different views on which rules apply in such situations. Mölndal city believes that travelers should not risk being stranded if they temporarily have no means to pay, and asserts that invoicing should be available under special circumstances.

Västtrafik, meanwhile, describes the regulations differently. According to the company, invoicing can be applied in certain exceptional cases, but it’s not something that can always be offered, especially when the trip is carried out by external taxi companies.

The municipality has now stated that it wants to clarify why their interpretations differ.

Received private help when society failed

Despite the tough situation, Mona received support from several people on site. Staff at a bakery offered her coffee and a bun, a passerby offered to pay for a taxi, and a security guard stayed with her until the trip home was arranged. In the end, a friend was able to pick her up by car.
