Indictment: Syrian at Elderly Home in Sundsvall Raped Colleague

A 26-year-old Syrian man who worked at an elderly care home in Sundsvall has been indicted for raping a female colleague. This is stated in an indictment submitted to the district court on Thursday.

The incident allegedly took place at the elderly home on Friday, March 6 of this year. According to the indictment, the man “inserted his fingers into and touched” the female colleague’s genital area, against her will.

Arrested, Released and Remanded

According to the indictment, the 26-year-old man is a Syrian citizen. He was detained in absentia the day after the alleged rape, arrested the same day, and the prosecutor requested that he be remanded in custody. However, the district court chose to release him on Wednesday, March 11.

But the prosecutor appealed the district court’s decision to the Court of Appeal for Lower Norrland, which on March 13 changed the decision. After being free for two days, the 26-year-old was again deprived of his liberty.

He has now been in custody for almost three weeks.

No Private Relationship

District prosecutor Maria Lindgren tells Samnytt that she cannot disclose where in the elderly home or how the rape transpired.

– I cannot go into detail, but it happened at the address specified in the indictment, she says.

The prosecutor also emphasizes that there was no private relationship between the victim and the accused man.

– They have not socialized privately at all, says Maria Lindgren.

So there is no relationship or prior history between the two relating to this incident?

– No.

Denies Crime

The accused 26-year-old has no previous convictions and denies any crime. There are no suspicions that he assaulted any of the elderly residents at the home.

Otherwise, Lindgren is very secretive about the investigation and indictment.

– There’s not much I can say when it comes to this type of crime. There’s confidentiality to protect the plaintiff, so I unfortunately can’t say much more, district prosecutor Maria Lindgren tells Samnytt.
