First, the Moderates, led by former Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt, were highly involved in rapidly transforming Sweden into a nearly unrecognizable country, with widespread insecurity that leaves many no longer feeling free to move about—some even taking detours due to lack of safety. Now, the same party aims to solve these problems by introducing even more laws and regulations to manage the population. The police would be given greater authority to intervene against individuals who “create insecurity and disturbances” in public spaces.

The proposal, called safety-enhancing area bans, is intended to give the police an additional tool against people behaving threateningly in places such as streets and squares.

According to the party, this would prevent a person from being present in a certain area for a limited time. The idea is that such a ban could be imposed for about 30 days. The exact details are not yet finalized and, according to Minister for Justice Gunnar Strömmer, require further investigation.

The proposal is described as an evolution of the powers the police already have under current exclusion bans and public order laws. It would primarily be employed against what Strömmer describes as “antisocial behavior.”

The police already have the ability to evict people who disturb the peace. However, the Moderates argue that this is not always sufficient, as such intervention only solves the issue temporarily.

Now the Moderates want to go further and give the police the authority to relocate residents the party does not want to see in the streets and squares.

– It only solves the problem in the moment, says Gunnar Strömmer to TT.

“Rowdy chaos boys”

The Moderates’ proposal would therefore enable the police, in some cases, to keep a person away from an area for a longer period, instead of merely removing them from the scene.

– We’ve had enough of rowdy ‘chaos boys’ who think they own our streets, says MUF chair Douglas Thor.

In a social media post, the Minister for Justice clarifies that the Moderates want to remove these “chaos boys” from public spaces.

– Now we are targeting those who just create disorder and insecurity, who are disruptive—to remove them from public spaces so that everyone else, not least the young and the elderly, can feel safer and freer in everyday life, says Strömmer in the post.
