The 31-year-old Congolese man, who is described as Danish in established media, is now being charged for beating Swedish father of young children and police officer Christian Zedig to death at a World Cup event in Copenhagen this summer. The man faces up to eight months in prison.
On June 30, 32-year-old Christian Zedig was at Islands Brygge with a friend to watch the World Cup on a large screen.
That evening, the match between Norway and Ivory Coast was being shown, but during the event, a conflict arose between different groups. The situation escalated and turned into a fight.
According to the indictment, the now-charged Congolese man allegedly struck Zedig hard on the left side of the head or neck. The blow caused, among other things, a rupture in an artery and Zedig was taken to hospital with serious injuries. Three days later, on July 3, he died from his injuries.
In addition to the assault on Zedig, the man is also being prosecuted for another assault. According to the indictment, he threw two beer cans at the group where Zedig was, one of which hit another person. The Congolese man has been in custody since his arrest after being wanted by Danish police.
At the same time, it is clear that the current suspicion of assault, according to the Copenhagen police, corresponds to a sentence of between eight and ten months in prison under Danish practice.
In its coverage of the trial in Copenhagen, SVT describes the defendant, a Congolese national, as a “Danish man”.
