The Swedish Parliament has now passed a proposal meaning that people with dual citizenship could, in the future, lose their Swedish citizenship if they commit crimes deemed to threaten Sweden’s most fundamental interests.
However, since the change affects the constitution, an additional parliamentary decision is required after the next election before the rules can fully come into effect.
The proposal also means that people who have acquired Swedish citizenship through false information or other incorrect circumstances could lose it, provided that they are also citizens of another country.
The new constitutional amendment does not specify exactly which crimes are covered. The details are instead to be established later through ordinary legislation. The government has stated, however, that it could involve serious organized crime and other activities considered to threaten society’s security or stability.
The Left Party and Green Party oppose revoking citizenship
The proposal has received support from a majority in parliament, but has faced criticism from certain parties. The Left Party and Green Party opposed the entire idea of being able to revoke citizenship, while the Centre Party was mainly critical of the part concerning crime.
