A 34-year-old man has been charged with five counts of attempted murder after driving into several pedestrians in West London on Saturday. Five people were injured when the car suddenly drove into a crowd of people on the busy shopping street Ealing Broadway.

The emergency services were alerted at 2:30 pm on Saturday. According to the Metropolitan Police, multiple pedestrians were struck before the car left the scene without stopping. The driver was stopped shortly afterwards in the nearby Grange Park area and arrested.

Three of the injured were taken to hospital, while an additional two received treatment at the scene. One of the three was transported to a trauma centre under highest priority, but according to police, none of the victims suffered life-threatening or life-changing injuries.

The London Ambulance Service dispatched significant resources to the scene, including ambulance staff, rapid response units, an incident commander, and the London Air Ambulance.

Charged with Five Attempted Murders

On Sunday, prosecutors announced that the suspect, Timir Ahmed Mohamed, has been charged with:

  • five counts of attempted murder
  • dangerous driving
  • leaving the scene of an accident
  • refusal to provide a breath sample
  • criminal damage

He has been remanded in custody and is expected to appear before Willesden Magistrates’ Court.

Born in Somalia

The Metropolitan Police have stated that the suspect is a British citizen born in Somalia. No further personal details or information about his background have been made public by the police. Authorities have also not announced any suspected motive.

Due to the nature of the incident, Counter Terrorism Policing London was involved in the initial investigation. However, after preliminary inquiries, police concluded the case should not be investigated as a terrorist offence.

Investigators state that they are still keeping all possible motives open as their work continues.

Witnesses Saw Migrant Leave the Scene

Videos and witness statements from the scene show how the car drove away after the collision, while several people ran after the vehicle. Shortly afterwards, the area was cordoned off and a major emergency operation was launched with police, ambulances, and other emergency personnel.

The police are now continuing to piece together the course of events and collect surveillance footage and witness statements from the scene.
