The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, has published a post on social media in which she praises the political developments in Hungary, following years of conflict between Brussels and the previous Hungarian government on issues including the country’s reluctance to adhere to EU values, particularly concerning Pride and LGBTQ policies. Now, as the new Prime Minister has signaled a change in course, von der Leyen writes that freedom is being celebrated on the streets of Budapest—a message that can be interpreted as suggesting Hungary is only now “liberated” as Brussels’ values gain greater influence.
Under Viktor Orbán’s tenure as Prime Minister, Pride celebrations in Hungary were relegated to fenced-off areas. However, this was never fully enforced, and participants continued to march through the streets while the celebrations remained open.

Among others, a number of Swedish left-liberal politicians participated in Hungary as recently as last summer, joining in the Pride festivities out on the streets.

Now with Orbán removed from power and the EU-friendly liberal Péter Magyar taking over, he is not only opening up for a more generous immigration policy with Brussels at the helm, but also for following their regulations and values regarding Pride.

Met with Strong Criticism
In Ursula von der Leyen’s comment section on social media, she is met with harsh criticism from people who believe she is destroying the union.

One of them is the Austrian national conservative commentator Martin Sellner, who describes her as “one of the most horrible people in European history.” He also calls her a traitor.

Similar reactions come from several other people. One user claims that von der Leyen is celebrating because she is destroying Hungary.

Another person points out that, according to him, sexual minorities can move freely in Hungary’s capital Budapest, whereas the situation is quite different in cities such as Berlin, Brussels, and Amsterdam.

This person does not state it directly but suggests that von der Leyen knows this difference is the result of the left-liberal migration policies pursued for many years in these countries.

This is something several people highlight in the comments section.
