Last week, hundreds of Muslims gathered in the iconic Times Square in the heart of New York City for iftar, the meal Muslims eat at sunset to break their fast during the holy month of Ramadan, and to pray.

It was on Friday evening that hundreds of Muslims flocked to Times Square, where 1,500 free meals were distributed on Broadway and Seventh Avenue. The event was organized by the Muslim-American so-called influencer WayofLifeSQ.

In addition to food and prayer, 1,200 copies of the Quran in several languages were also given out.

According to WayofLifeSQ, two Americans converted to Islam during the event, which was met with applause and cheers from those gathered.

At the turn of the year, New York got a new mayor in the Muslim Democrat—or, depending on who you ask, communist—Zohran Mamdani.

New York City has allowed similar public Muslim gatherings in Times Square even before Mamdani’s victory in the mayoral election. Previous Ramadan events were held under former mayor Eric Adams, and similar gatherings have taken place for years in public spaces like Washington Square Park.

There are up to one million Muslims in New York City, which makes up about nine percent of the total population.
