US President Donald Trump believes that the ceasefire between the US and Iran has, in practice, collapsed after recent military escalation in the Strait of Hormuz. According to Trump, the regime in Iran is “crazy.”

In June, the US and Iran reached a memorandum of understanding which stipulated that both sides would refrain from military attacks for 60 days while negotiations for a more permanent peace agreement continued. But now it appears the talks have broken down once again.

At a press conference on Wednesday, Trump was asked whether the deal was still in effect after both the US and Iran had carried out attacks against one another.

– That’s an interesting question. To me, it’s over. I don’t want to make a deal with them anymore, said Trump when asked about the memorandum the countries agreed to in June.

Overnight, the US stated that it had carried out attacks on more than 80 military targets in Iran. According to the US military command, CENTCOM, the operation was a response to Iranian attacks on merchant ships in the Strait of Hormuz.

The remarks come after the most intense fighting between the countries in several months. At the same time, the president has not ruled out that American negotiators can continue talks with the Iranian side.

– Our amazing negotiators can keep talking with them if they wish. But I think it’s a waste of time. As I see it, the ceasefire is over.

Iran responded by attacking US military bases in Bahrain and Kuwait, simultaneously accusing Washington of breaking the previous agreement between the countries.

From “nice” to “sick”

As recently as mid-June, Trump praised the Iranian regime as “nice” and “smart.”

– And we are dealing with people who I consider very rational. They were nice to deal with. Strong people, smart people. I actually think they’re smarter than the first and second group, but they are not radicalized and they, you know, are trying to help their country, Trump said at the time.

But now the US president has changed his mind.

– They are sick people. They are led by sick people and they are ruthless, violent people. And if they had a nuclear weapon, they would use it. For me, it’s over.

Trump simultaneously directed sharp criticism at the Iranian regime and made it clear he no longer believes in any meaningful negotiation process.

– As far as I’m concerned, it’s over. It’s a waste of time to negotiate with them, they are liars.

Despite the harsh rhetoric, Trump said his negotiators, including Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, can still continue discussions with Iran if they wish.

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte also attended the press conference and expressed his support for the US military action against Iran.

Breaking Off Trade With Spain

The president also criticized NATO, arguing that the US has long had to bear an unreasonably large share of the costs within the alliance.

– We pay a disproportionate amount.

Trump specifically criticized Spain, calling it a “terrible partner.” According to the president, the country neither contributes enough nor takes enough financial responsibility. He also said he has asked Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent to halt all trade with Spain.

– Spain is a waste of time. I don’t want to do any business with them.

Greenland

Trump also brought up Greenland, repeating his previous statements about the island’s strategic importance.

– Greenland is a big problem for us, said Trump, and continued:

– We need it to protect the world, not just the US. It doesn’t help Denmark, but it helps us.

But Denmark’s Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen rejected Trump’s statements, assuring that Denmark is prepared to defend Greenland.

– We are ready to defend every inch of NATO, including our own territory, said Frederiksen.
