At the turn of the year, a new pricing model will come into effect following a decision by the Swedish Energy Markets Inspectorate. This could mean that households with electric cars may have to pay several thousand kronor more each year.

The purpose of the new pricing model is to even out peaks in consumption in order to avoid the need for expanding the electricity grid. The aim is also to try to get electricity customers to change their behavior and use less electricity when the grid is overloaded.

At Ellevio, the change will come into effect at the turn of the year, but it is already in place at some other electricity grid companies. From 2027, it will be a legal requirement to minimize the load on the electricity grids.

It is primarily electric car owners who charge at home during the day who may be affected by significantly higher costs – several thousand kronor more per year. The same applies to those with other high-power electricity consumers in a property.

Charge at night

– It’s true that if you charge fully, it will cost more. If you have an electric car, you will probably be one of all the customers who are on the losing side, says David Bjurhall, head of price and regulatory issues at Ellevio, to Swedish Radio.

In addition to the new pricing model, which is based on household peaks, prices will also increase by six percent at the turn of the year. According to Bjurhall, you should try to charge the electric car at night to avoid being affected by too large price increases.
