Social media has during Eid been filled with video clips from celebrations across Sweden. Samnytt has reviewed a selection of these clips and can show how the festivities have looked – from large gatherings to Social Democratic mobilization in connection with the holiday. Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson (M) has also wished Sweden’s Muslims a happy Eid on social media.

The video clips reviewed by Samnytt show large crowds, festivities, and celebrations near mosques and open gathering places.

Several of the clips feature people dancing, singing, and celebrating. At the same time, there are also clear political elements present during the festivities.

In one of the clips, we get a look at how the Eid celebration can appear in Malmö, with the creator commenting, “this isn’t some Arab country – this is Malmö – allahu akbar.”

At a celebration in Helsingborg, a Muslim woman expresses satisfaction with the holiday, explaining, “it feels like we’re at home,” just like in any Muslim country.

All over the country, the Social Democrats have been present with campaign materials and party representatives. In videos and photos from various Eid events, red party tents, the distribution of informational material, and local Social Democratic leaders meeting visitors can all be seen.

The party has, for many years, actively worked to mobilize the Muslim voter base and strengthen its support; Eid celebrations have become yet another arena for this effort.

Government Sends Greetings

Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson also recognized Eid on social media. In a greeting aimed at Muslims in Sweden, or as he himself wrote, Swedish Muslims, the Prime Minister wished everyone celebrating a happy Eid.

Not all followers are positive, however. The comments section has been filled with critical reactions, with some users sharply criticizing him – among other things, by calling him a “traitor to the country.”
