Over the past five years, food prices have risen by a staggering 33 percent. When it comes to this year’s Christmas table, some items have become cheaper while others have become more expensive. Here is the latest price statistics.

Among the items typically included in the Christmas table, coffee, chocolate, and butter stand out with the most significant price increases.

“The price of butter for Christmas baking has increased by 62 percent compared to 2020. Then, of course, we have coffee, which has become 101 percent more expensive, and chocolate, which has increased by 71 percent over the past five years,” says Caroline Neander, price statistician at SCB.

SCB has compared the price development of Christmas food, baking ingredients, candy, and chocolate. During the autumn, food prices have dropped slightly, but in November, items such as bell peppers, cauliflower, and white cabbage became more expensive. Jam and marmalade also increased in price.

“Over the course of a year, meat has become more expensive. The price of beef has increased by 20 percent compared to November last year, and even lamb has become 19 percent more expensive in a year,” says Caroline Neander.
