A 48-year-old Syrian man who worked for home care services in Vänersborg has been sentenced to prison for, among other things, sexual assault against a patient. This has been decided by the Vänersborg District Court. The man has been a Swedish citizen since October 2024, and therefore cannot be deported.

It was in August last year that an elderly woman in Vänersborg received a visit from home care. The home care worker who visited her is a 48-year-old father of six. He came to Sweden from Syria during the so-called migrant crisis in 2015.

The 48-year-old spends a ‘long time’ at the woman’s home, says that she owns a nice and large house, asks if she is married, and wonders if he can rent a room from her.

“Grannyspace”

During the same visit, the man presses his finger against the woman’s genitals and clitoris. During police questioning, the woman tells that he ‘drove in’, ‘pressed’, and ‘twisted’ his finger in her genitals. She says he kept doing this for a long time, 15-30 minutes, and at the same time commented on her genitals, saying ‘it doesn’t look like it’s been used much’.

The victim told another home care worker about the assault the following day, and also told her child. The incident was then reported to the police.

During police questioning, the 48-year-old man admits to touching the woman’s genitals. However, he claims it was a ‘treatment’ where he massaged her, and that this was something she had asked him to do.

When the police examined the home care worker’s mobile phone, they found ‘pornographic material indicating a sexual interest in older women’. Among other things, the man had visited a website called ‘Grannyspace’.

Allowed to Remain in Sweden

The 48-year-old man has no prior convictions for serious crimes. However, the Syrian family is known to Social Services in Vänersborg because there is domestic violence and Islam-related problems in the household.

Among other things, the children are beaten by their father, and the 48-year-old has also taken a second wife, whom he married according to Muslim customs. This has created conflict in the family.

The 48-year-old Syrian has now been sentenced to one year in prison for sexual assault against the 80-year-old woman. He has also been convicted of assaulting a 13-year-old daughter and for making unlawful threats against his first wife. The man’s first wife did not want to sleep in the bedroom with him, which led him to threaten her life in front of their children.

However, the man was acquitted of the charge of child welfare breach and one count of unlawful threat. The 48-year-old Syrian became a Swedish citizen in October 2024 and therefore can no longer be expelled for these crimes under current law.

The 80-year-old woman who was sexually assaulted is, according to the verdict, suffering greatly from the incident and has stated that she no longer sees a reason to go on living.
