A 23-year-old man, residing in Vimmerby but born in Syria, has been convicted of multiple serious terror crimes connected to the Islamic State (IS). The sentence is three years and three months in prison. The man has dual citizenships and therefore cannot be deported under current law.

23-year-old Ajman Shanab has been convicted of aggravated participation in a terrorist organization, aggravated financing of terrorism, aggravated attempted financing of terrorism, and two counts of travel for terrorism. The crimes cover the period from June 1, 2023–February 21, 2025 (participation) and transactions during 2023–2024.

The district court found that during the period, Ajman had a qualified connection to IS and, among other things, collected/gathered material linked to the organization. In the reasoning, it was also mentioned as evidence that an IS propaganda film download was interrupted at the time of his arrest.

Cryptocurrency Transfers and Terror Travels

The investigation shows that Ajman made at least eight cryptocurrency transfers totaling 8,372 SEK to collections that the court links to IS. He also attempted a further 26 transactions totaling 39,883 SEK.

Ajman is also convicted for two terror-related journeys. The first began on September 4, 2023 from Sigtuna towards Ethiopia/Somalia. The second started on March 18, 2024 and went to Somalia via Saudi Arabia.

District Court Unanimous on Terror Crimes

Senior Judge Johan Nordin, presiding judge in the case, commented on the verdict at the court’s website:

– The district court has considered that all the charged acts were connected to IS as a terrorist organization and that the man had the intent required for liability under the terrorism legislation.

Reduced Sentence After Long Detention

The district court judged that the aggregate penalty value was three years and four months, but reduced the sentence to three years and three months citing extended pre-trial detention under restrictions. Ajman has been detained since February 24, 2025, and was under restrictions until the main hearing concluded on December 8, 2025.

The court also decided that two confiscated mobile phones are to be forfeited, and that Ajman must pay 1,000 SEK to the crime victim fund.

Cannot Be Deported – Government Wants to Change Constitution

The verdict states that Ajman has dual citizenship, in Syria and Sweden. He therefore cannot be deported under current law.

The Tidö parties have proposed constitutional amendments so that Swedish citizenship can be revoked from people with dual citizenship in cases of serious crimes threatening Sweden’s security, such as terrorist offenses.

At the same time that Ajman acted as a terrorist for IS, he also worked in home care in Sweden. This was recently revealed by Samnytt.
