A recipient of home care services in Västerås was reportedly left without assistance despite their bed being soaked with urine. When the individual asked for help, the home care staff allegedly replied that it was not part of their duties.
According to the report, the care recipient asked the morning staff for help changing the bed linens and to have the bed made with fresh sheets on one occasion in early May. The staff then stated that this task was not their responsibility before leaving the residence.
– That is not our duty, said the home care staff before leaving the home, according to SR.
The care recipient was left in the urine-soaked bed without help from the home care service. Instead, a friend had to be contacted to assist with the situation. The friend then helped the person to shower, change the bed linens, and make the bed with clean sheets.
The municipality has not stated why the staff considered assistance with urine-soaked bedding to be outside their work duties. This is despite home care guidelines stipulating that services are to be tailored to the individual’s needs, especially regarding personal hygiene, care, and dignity.
The incident has been reported to the Health and Social Care Inspectorate (IVO) under Lex Sarah for investigation of the misconduct.
