A 25-year-old Sudanese citizen was recently convicted by the Kalmar District Court after having tortured and terrorized his girlfriend over a period of six months. Among other things, he dragged her by the hair, hit her, threatened to kill her, and bit her on the nose while she was pregnant. The latter reportedly happened because the woman wanted to have an abortion. The prosecutor requested deportation of the Sudanese woman abuser – but the district court lets him stay in Sweden. Samnytt can now reveal more about the terror and the officials involved in the decision.

The woman, in her 30s, came to Sweden from Turkey at the end of 2022. The same year, the Sudanese man, Mohammed Ibrahim, 25, also immigrated to Sweden. The woman and Ibrahim met in early 2023 when they attended the same SFI class and quickly became a couple.

During the period when Ibrahim terrorized the woman, they did not live together, but he reportedly spent time at her place almost every day. Despite the conviction, the woman and Ibrahim remain a couple today.

On February 19, 2024, the woman sought emergency medical care after Ibrahim shoved her, causing her to hit the back of her head on the floor; she experienced pain on the entire right side of her head, her right eye, and when turning her neck.

The doctor determined that she had suffered a traumatic head injury with probable neck injury. She was prescribed pain medication and sent home. The matter did not involve the police at that time, as the woman claimed she had fallen herself.

On March 22, 2024, the woman went to the police station in Kalmar and reported being assaulted by her boyfriend, Ibrahim. She also stated that on several occasions over two weeks, he had forced her to have sex with him against her will.

The Woman is Terrified of the Sudanese Man

Police immediately noted that the woman appeared afraid of Ibrahim, wavering on whether to file a report and expressing concern over Ibrahim’s potential anger toward her.

She said she was unsure of how she felt about Mohammed (Ibrahim, ed. note). When asked, she didn’t know if they were a couple or not. She asked me if it was the right thing for her to go to the police. I answered that she was doing the right thing by reporting the crimes and that it wasn’t her fault that Mohammed had assaulted her.

NN expressed concern that Mohammed would be angry with her for reporting him. During questioning, NN spoke very quietly and was unsure about what to say. Both the interrogator and I had to encourage NN to participate in the complaint. I felt she was afraid of what Mohammed might do to her if he found out she had reported him.

On April 18, 2024, a phone call took place between Ibrahim and the woman. During the conversation, he is heard on several occasions threatening to kill her. The woman recorded the call, and the transcript is now part of the evidence against him.

The Sudanese Man: “You Are a Whore”

On May 3, 2024, several police patrols were dispatched to the woman’s address in Kalmar, where Ibrahim reportedly strangled the woman three to four times, one time so severely that she lost consciousness. He also repeatedly hit her.

He refused to leave the apartment when asked and declared he would kill her. The woman also told police that on one occasion he called her “you are a whore” and “you are a bitch”.

The woman later became pregnant as a result of the relationship, but when she told Ibrahim she couldn’t have children with him and wanted an abortion, he bit her on the nose. She reportedly suffered great pain from the bite and sought hospital care. This was in August 2024.

When she was at the hospital, Ibrahim came and threatened to use a sex tape of her if she told the authorities, which made her too afraid to report the incident right at that time.

Ibrahim “Owned Her Like a Whore”

Ibrahim went to the woman’s apartment again at the end of September 2024. The woman reportedly had her period and did not want to have sex with him. Ibrahim checked if she was bleeding by undressing her, against her will.

She only wanted him to leave the apartment – which he promised he would do if he could have sex with her. She finally gave in but experienced pain and heavy bleeding. She told him to stop but he continued anyway.

She herself stated in police interrogation that it was as if Ibrahim “owned her like a whore” and that she cried during the rape. It all ended when a neighbor finally called the police, who were able to come to her aid.

Not Deported – Home Care and SFI

Mohammed Ibrahim was prosecuted for severe violation of a woman’s integrity, including four cases of assault and two of illegal threats, and it was requested that he be deported to his home country with a ban on returning for 10 years.

Even though the court sided with the prosecutor and convicted him of severe violation of a woman’s integrity, sentencing him to 1 year and 6 months in prison, the court chose to reject the request for his deportation. There is no lengthy reasoning for why the woman abuser is allowed to remain in Sweden.

The court does note that the basic prerequisites for deportation are met. But even though he committed a serious crime, the court points to his ties to Sweden: he has an “orderly housing situation” and has “studied at SFI”.

He also reportedly has a full-time job in home care and works occasional shifts with the night patrol. This is stated in the district court’s judgment.

The District Court’s Reasoning

Since Mohammed Ibrahim is sentenced to prison for an offense with a penal value exceeding six months, the fundamental conditions for deportation due to crime are fulfilled. The question then is whether Mohammed Ibrahim has such ties to Sweden that he should not be deported.

When assessing ties to Sweden, the extent to which the foreign national has established themselves in Swedish society must be considered. It has emerged in the case that Mohammed Ibrahim was transferred to Sweden together with his family at the end of 2022 at the request of the International Criminal Court. In Sweden, he has his mother, stepfather, and siblings. He has no family left in Sudan.

He has an orderly housing situation. It has also emerged that he has studied at SFI and for the past two years has had a full-time job in home care and, in addition, an on-call position with the night patrol. He has a stable economy. Mohammed appears in the criminal records, but only regarding a contact prohibition and a penalty notice regarding a minor offense. Overall, the district court assesses that Mohammed has such strong ties to Sweden that he should not be deported.

The prosecutor’s request for deportation is therefore rejected.

The Officials Allowing the Fearsome African to Stay

The officials who decided that the Sudanese man gets to stay in Sweden despite the terror against his girlfriend were district court judge Mina Inevik, 29 years old; and the lay judges Lennart Engren, 83 years old (Westerwik Party), Inger Karlsson, 80 years old (unknown), and Kristina Podolak-Andersson, 76 years old (Social Democrats).
