The anti-immigration campaign Save Europe Act claims that the Mayor of Brussels has banned the demonstration that was scheduled to take place in the EU capital on Tuesday, where organizers planned to deliver hundreds of thousands of signatures to the European Commission.

The demonstration was planned for July 15 outside the EU institutions in Brussels. According to the organizers, participants were to deliver the signatures collected in support of the campaign.

Save Europe Act states that the movement has already collected over 430,000 declarations of support and describes itself as one of the fastest-growing anti-immigration campaigns in Europe.

Save Europe Act was launched earlier this year as a European Citizens’ Initiative (ECI). Among other things, the campaign seeks to halt large-scale immigration from non-Western countries, strengthen repatriation of people without legal right to stay, and give member states greater ability to protect Europe’s demographic and cultural development.

The initiative has, however, come into conflict with the European Commission. At the end of June, the Commission announced in a preliminary statement that it was considering refusing to register the initiative. According to the Commission’s lawyers, parts of the proposal may be considered contrary to the EU treaties and the Charter of Fundamental Rights as they discriminate between people on the basis of ethnic or cultural origin.

The organizers reject the criticism, asserting that the proposals concern migration policy and national self-determination – not ethnic discrimination. They have stated that they do not intend to change the content of the campaign and have promised to continue advancing the issue even if the Commission refuses to register the initiative.

On Tuesday, campaign representatives are expected to announce further information on how they intend to proceed. At the same time, the European Commission’s final decision remains on whether the Save Europe Act will be allowed to be registered as an official European Citizens’ Initiative and thereby be able to gather valid signatures under EU regulations.

Eva Vlaardingerbroek, who belongs to the movement, will, however, speak before the EU Parliament after being invited by Tomasz Froelich from Germany’s AfD.
