The five-year-old girl who was seriously injured in a stabbing in Furutorpsparken in Helsingborg on Monday is still being treated at the hospital, but her condition is now described as stable. Meanwhile, a comprehensive police investigation is underway to clarify why a boy under the age of 15 is suspected of attacking her.

On Tuesday, police announced that the girl’s physical condition is stable and that, considering the circumstances, she is doing well. The case is being investigated as attempted murder, and investigators are now working to map out the sequence of events, the motive, and whether there was any relationship between the suspected boy and the girl. However, police do not wish to comment on whether the two knew each other.

The suspect is a boy under the age of 15. Since he is below the age of criminal responsibility, he could not be detained or remanded in custody, but has instead been taken into custody by social services. The police are continuing to conduct witness interviews, analyze surveillance footage, and review technical evidence from the crime scene.

According to reports, the attack was completely unprovoked and the boy himself called 112 after the incident and confessed to what he had done. Police have not confirmed these details but have stated that technical evidence has been secured at the scene.

Police report that they are now carrying out both an intensive investigative effort and measures to increase safety in the area in cooperation with the municipality.

Extra police resources are present and the public is urged to come forward if they have pictures, videos, or other information that may aid the investigation.

The knife was still there

Witnesses have described chaotic scenes after the attack. A park worker was among the first to arrive and help the seriously injured girl before the ambulance arrived. Other witnesses say they heard screams and saw a man carry the bleeding girl from the playground.

– I just thought, take care of the child, that was the first thing, park worker Axel Östlund told TT.

The knife was still in place as he carried the girl. Witnesses report she had injuries in or around her neck.

Police: Isolated incident

According to media reports, the girl’s mother has said the family was visiting Helsingborg and did not know anyone in the area.

The incident has sparked strong reactions in Helsingborg and is described as one of the most notable violent crimes against a child in the city in recent years. At the same time, police stress that at present, there is nothing to suggest that the public is at any continued risk and describe the incident as “isolated”.

The investigation is expected to continue over the coming days, while social services remain responsible for the suspected boy.
