Over 60 people are feared dead after a plane collided with a helicopter during approach to Reagan National Airport outside Washington DC. This is reported by American media.
It is just before nine o’clock on Wednesday evening local time, or around three o’clock in the morning on Thursday Swedish time, when a Bombardier plane, flying on behalf of American Airlines, is preparing to land at Reagan National Airport in the American capital.
But with only a few hundred meters left to the runway, the passenger plane collides with a Black Hawk helicopter. The collision is captured on film by a webcam.
Over 60 Feared Dead
There are 64 people on board the passenger plane. 60 passengers and four crew members. On board the military helicopter are three soldiers reported to be on a training mission.
Both the airplane and the helicopter crash into the Potomac River after the collision. A major rescue operation is launched, but no one has been found alive so far. However, dozens of dead bodies have been recovered and all 67 are feared to have perished.
It is unclear how the airplane and helicopter could collide, but both the helicopter crew and the air traffic controllers at the airport were aware of the landing plane.
On his social media platform Truth Social, President Donald Trump questions both the helicopter crew’s and the air traffic controllers’ actions, and believes that the accident could have been avoided.
