Chaos erupted on Sunday evening local time at the well-known Bondi Beach in Sydney when two men opened fire on beachgoers. Ten people have been killed and around 16 have been injured in the attack.

The alarm came at 18:40 local time when the beach was filled with visitors. Several eyewitnesses describe scenes of panic as the shots began to ring out at the beach and reportedly lasted for about ten minutes.

“People started running along the beach. It was panic,” says Elizabeth Mealey to ABC News.

Video clips circulating on social media show two men in black opening fire at what British newspaper The Telegraph describes as a celebration of the Jewish holiday of Hanukkah at the location.

“There were 2,000 members of our community celebrating Hanukkah and lighting the first candle together at Bondi Beach,” says Jeremy Leibler, president of the Zionist Federation of Australia.

An extensive police and rescue operation is still ongoing. Images from the scene show injured people being cared for on a lawn next to the beach while ambulance personnel work intensively.

Watch as a passerby overwhelms the shooter and takes his weapon.
