Forest fires are now commonly described as a result of climate change, but when the causes of individual fires are investigated, it often turns out that the initial spark has entirely different explanations. Now, Greek authorities have determined that the green transition itself is contributing to the risks—a major forest fire west of Athens started when cables from a wind farm created sparks that ignited the dry vegetation.

Two people have been arrested after the massive forest fire that raged for several days in the Greek region of Boeotia and then spread toward Attica. According to fire investigators, the blaze was caused by sparks from a power line transporting electricity from a wind farm with five turbines to the national grid.

The investigation is based on video footage and witness statements. Authorities report that oscillations in the power lines generated sparks, which fell into the dry vegetation. Amid strong winds, the fire quickly developed into a major blaze, destroying large forest areas and numerous homes.

Engineers and Contractors Investigated for Aggravated Arson

The suspects are the electrical engineer responsible for the planning and monitoring of the facility and the contractor who installed the lines. They are suspected of aggravated arson, while police are also searching for the owner of the wind farm.

The investigation also indicates that the same power line was involved in a previous fire just weeks before, around a hundred meters from the current site. The facility was repaired then, but according to authorities, the measures proved insufficient to prevent a new failure.

Several hundred firefighters have participated in the extinguishing efforts along with planes and international reinforcements, while several communities have been forced to evacuate.

Climate Usually Not the Cause of Fires

The Greek fire is yet another example showing that major forest fires often have a tangible ignition cause. While high temperatures, drought, and strong winds can allow a fire to spread quickly, in many cases it is human actions or technical faults that trigger the blaze itself.
