U.S. President Donald Trump confused Greenland with Iceland on several occasions during his speech at the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos.
Trump’s desire to lay claim to Greenland is hardly news. The American president’s demands have triggered a serious diplomatic crisis between the U.S. and the EU, not least with the Kingdom of Denmark.
Trump repeated this demand during his speech in Davos on Wednesday.
Confused Greenland with Iceland
As usual, Trump was animated and jumped between different topics in his speech. Forty minutes in, things got particularly confusing when the American president suddenly started talking about another island: Iceland.
– Until recently, when I talked about Iceland, they loved me. They called me “Daddy.” Last time, a very wise man said, “He’s our daddy,” said Trump, likely referring to NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte.

Trump then accused his NATO allies of being unreliable, and of not standing by the U.S. when it truly mattered. And once again, it was Iceland, not Greenland, that the American president seemed eager to get his hands on:
– They don’t stand up for us when it comes to Iceland. That much I can say. I mean, our stock market crashed yesterday because of Iceland. So Iceland has already cost us a lot of money.
Iceland was previously, like Greenland, part of the Danish kingdom. However, since 1918, the island has been an independent country.
