In 2025, just over 89,000 residence permits were issued. This year, the list is topped by a new country, closely followed by Ukraine.

Since the Tidö parties won the 2022 election, numerous tightening measures have been implemented in migration policy, affecting residence permits, citizenship, and work permits. The year 2025 appears to have a substantial overall decline in granted citizenships of around 40 percent, which Samnytt previously reported on. Meanwhile, further restrictions for citizenship have been introduced.

In an interview with Samnytt, Ludvig Aspling stated that major changes have occurred and that even more will come when the new laws take effect. He previously wrote in Samnytt about the significant changes already made:

A person following immigration law who fell asleep before the 2022 election and then woke up before the 2026 election would be shocked, but since changes are implemented step by step over a four-year period, it easily creates the illusion that nothing is happening.

The media naturally take advantage of this; their strategy against the Sweden Democrats has clearly changed since the election. Previously, the narrative was that our policy was extreme and impossible to implement; now that it’s being implemented, the narrative is instead that it makes no difference. Both claims are equally false and are only intended to help the left win the next election.

Especially when looking at different groups of immigrants, the trend is clear according to Aspling, who pointed out that asylum immigration and their relatives have already decreased by about 40 percent since 2022. Migration from Africa, the Middle East, and parts of Asia has also dropped by more than 60 percent.

Sveriges Radio reported in January that total asylum-related immigration is at a “record low.”
