A Syrian man, who after six years in Sweden still requires an Arabic interpreter, was nevertheless considered qualified enough to work in home care in Norrtälje, northern Greater Stockholm. The man has now been sentenced to one year in prison for aggravated sexual assault against an 88-year-old woman suffering from cancer. Deportation was not considered since the man, who does not speak Swedish, has been granted Swedish citizenship.
The incident occurred during the summer, when 40-year-old Hasan Almohammad visited the woman for the first time on July 31. At that time, he offered to massage her back, which was aching after she had been treated for a tumor. The man took olive oil from her kitchen and massaged her back.

At the next visit on August 3, Hasan Almohammad repeated the massage offer. But this time, the man moved his hand from the back to the woman’s groin, inside her underwear, and according to court documents touched her labia and inner thighs.

The 88-year-old woman, who has now turned 89, estimates the unwanted touching lasted up to ten minutes. She was shocked, frightened, and froze when the Syrian man began his assault.

“It was silly”
The Syrian was arrested on September 24 but was released already the next day and has been free since then. In police interrogations, he stated that he had massaged the woman’s back on two occasions after she herself requested it.
According to court records, Hasan Almohammad’s employer told the police that the man himself reportedly said it was “silly” when confronted regarding the massage at the pensioner’s home. This happened after the woman recounted the incident to other staff and her relatives.

The man, who requires interpretation in Arabic, has denied the crime and defended himself by saying he only massaged her back and also that he has no medical training as an explanation for his actions.

On February 18, Norrtälje District Court announced that the woman’s testimony was “credible and reliable” and found the man guilty of aggravated sexual assault.
The crime is considered aggravated because the man abused his position in home care as well as the woman’s vulnerable and defenseless situation.
However, deportation was never an option as the Syrian was granted Swedish citizenship in 2022. Zoom in to read an excerpt from the verdict:
