An unexpected find was made in the tourist resort Patong on the island of Phuket when staff at a self-storage company opened an unpaid unit and discovered several pistols and ammunition. In Thai media, the suspected perpetrator is described as a “Swede” and goes by the name “Elmi Ahmed Mohamed.”
The storage unit, located in a shopping center in central Patong, had been rented by the Swedish citizen Elmi Ahmed Mohamed. The name Elmi is common in Somalia and may indicate a Somali background.
According to the company, the rent had not been paid for over four months and all attempts to contact the man had failed. After the deadline for unpaid rentals had passed by about 120 days, the company decided to open the storage unit together with the police, in accordance with company procedures.

When staff unlocked the unit, they found five pistols and a total of 100 rounds of 9mm caliber ammunition. Among the weapons were four Glock pistols and a CZ brand pistol. All of the guns had serial numbers and were immediately seized by police for further technical examination, reports The Thaiger.
Police in Patong state that they are now reviewing registration and documentation to ascertain whether the weapons were legally registered and stored in accordance with current regulations. Thailand’s gun laws are very strict, especially for foreign nationals, who may only possess firearms in exceptional cases with special permits.
